Please note that this event will be held in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The rights of intersex* people continue to be violated throughout the European Union. In at least 21 Member States, intersex infants are still subject to unnecessary and irreversible medical and surgical interventions. Many member States require births to be certified and registered as either male or female. A whole range of legal and administrative obstacles stand in the way of recognition of intersex people’s rights.
In May 2015 two important publications were launched. The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human rights published a research paper on human rights and intersex people, while the EU’s Fundamental Rights Agency published a focus paperon the fundamental rights situation of intersex people.
On Tuesday 8 September from 15.00 – 16.00, the Intergroup, in close cooperation with ILGA-Europe, OII-Europe and the Council of Europe, will host a seminar in the European Parliament in Strasbourg where both reports will be presented, followed by a discussion between parliamentarians, civil society and policy makers on ways to tackle human rights violations intersex people experience.
In case you need accreditation for the Parliament, you can register by sending an email to email@example.com, latest by Friday 4 September mid-day. Please indicate clearly your first name, last name, date of birth, nationality, ID type (passport or ID card) and number.
